Values Academy Birmingham is an independent special school located on the edge of the historic Jewellery Quarter, about 10 minutes from Birmingham City Centre.
Students are referred to us from many local authorities and we pride ourselves in supporting young people who may have found mainstream school or other alternative education a challenge. We believe that one size does not fit all and that it takes a special understanding and commitment to support students who may find it difficult to adjust or fit in with the so called ‘norms’ in society. This is why the focus is teaching a young person to be ‘a better person tomorrow than they were yesterday’. We are able to do this with highly skilled, empathetic and caring staff from diverse backgrounds who are able to use their own life experiences to enhance a young person’s thoughts and feelings.
Although academically, our students are taught in small groups, there are many opportunities for individual support sessions to ensure that no pupil is left behind. Personal Development Sessions support weekly behaviour analysis and reward based targets are discussed with the young person to encourage positivity. Individual pastoral sessions can be delivered as part of a young person’s programme, or may be reactive towards a situation emerging; for example, peer issues, anger management, how others may feel. In addition, 1 to 1 intervention sessions take place to ensure youngsters are meeting their mathematics and English targets. Regular off-site activities take place to help students to learn how to be positive in the community and these excursions are a real joy to all.
Many of our young people find it difficult to function in even small group situations. Our staff take great care to build their confidence and the majority eventually take part in our weekly Community Group Meeting. This is an opportunity to celebrate students’ individual achievements throughout the week and discuss any issues they might have. Students take turns to Chair the meeting and they have a great sense of pride when regular congratulations and certificates are issued. The meeting ends with a ‘moment of reflection’ where students are encouraged to think of others, or to discuss different situations throughout the world.
Overall, Values Academy is a caring environment for all children and we pride ourselves in our positive relationships with parents and colleagues who support students across the city.
