The Choking Game

Dear Parents and carers

I would like to bring your attention to the  safeguarding issue above that we have been made aware of, which some of you may already know about as it has been discussed in the media for the past few years.  We are aware that there are several posts on various social media channels which may result in renewed concern.  Please see some information below:

Signs to look for:

  • Blood shot eyes
  • Headaches
  • Bruises on the neck
  • Disorientation after spending time alone
  • Locked doors at home
  • Rope, scarves, belts hanging from the bed or doorknob or knotted on the floor

Other names to look out for:

  • American Dream
  • Knockout game
  • Choke out
  • Flatliner
  • Space cowboy

This is not an exhaustive list as there seems to be limited research conducted, but motivation amongst young people seems to be such reasons as thrill seeking or feeling it is a low risk activity.  Peer pressure may play a part together with curiosity.  There is also the belief amongst some that it can lead to brief euphoria.

I would urge you all to be vigilant and please the School Leader if you have any queries or need further information.
