Afternoon tea with the residents of Robert Harvey House
Students were recently given the opportunity to visit Robert Harvey House Handsworth which is part of the Broadening Choices for Older People Charity. The staff and students spent a few weeks beforehand bringing in toiletries, chocolates, biscuits and other luxury items for the students to create a hamper and donate this to the residents.
Once there it was clear to the students that Robert Harvey House is a residential home with a difference. Students enjoyed a tour of the pet farm and onsite Sensory Street. They were able to view the replica street of vintage shops and the tearoom. Staff, students and the residents then enjoyed a cup of tea and cake whilst the younger people were regaled with tales from the older people about their childhood and how much they enjoyed living at Robert Harvey House. For the less able bodied, the students were made to feel comfortable enough to go and see them in their individual rooms. Feedback from the house was really positive and the manager, Anthea Reid wrote to the students thanking them for taking a genuine interest in the residents.
Our students were inspired with the visit and have requested a return around Easter time. This is a partnership we hope to develop over the coming months as there were obvious benefits to both groups with a positive mutual respect shown.
