Award winning writer visits Values Academy

To start the new academic year, in September 2017 Alex Wheatle MBE visited our Birmingham school to talk to our students about his life and background, and how after spending most of his childhood in social services care, and unsure of what to do with his life he has gone on to become an award winning author.

During the visit Alex answered various questions about his life and the students were interested to know what inspired him to write, he also read extracts from his books which engaged our students, and feedback from them was that they wanted to read the full collection.

His first book Brixton Rock was published in 1999, and since then Alex has gone onto writing a further 9 books.  Alex has won many awards and in 2008 was awarded an MBE for his services to literature.  A full set of books are now available in both our schools for the students to read and enjoy, and hopefully he may have inspired a future author !
